How I choose my wedding cake designer?
You’ve got the point of ordering your wedding cake - congratulations! This is where the fun part of wedding planning can start to happen.
When picking your cake designer, ask yourself the following questions:
-What is your budget? Think about what you would like to spend initially - you can always tweak your budget once you’ve made some enquiries and done some more research. You don’t want to contact someone who makes incredible cakes which are way out of your price range.
- How will the cake fit with the style of your wedding? You want to pick a cake designer that creates a wedding cake that is in keeping with themes and styles of your wedding. For example, if your wedding is in an ultra modern location or somewhere a bit art deco, you will want to pick a baker who specialises in modern wedding cakes.
- Where is your wedding? You wouldn't necessarily pick a London based cake designer for a wedding in Edinburgh, for example. Try to stay local as much as possible (this will help to keep the costs down too)
- Do you have any necessary dietary requirements - There are lots of bakers who specialise in cakes for certain dietary requirements, so if you do need something specific contact those people first.
Wedding venues will often have preferred suppliers, so you may wish to speak to them first about their recommended cake designers. However, these are other bakers out there who may be better suited to your needs, so it’s always advisable to look around a little bit. You can have a look on websites like Hitched or Bridebook, but a quick Google, Instagram or Pinterest search will give you a great variety of options to choose from too. Have a look at the cake designer’’s website to get a feel for the sort of people they are. Do you feel you could work well with them? When choosing suppliers for my wedding, I looked at their back story (usually on the ‘about me’ section of their website) and tried to get a feel for their personality and whether we would vibe with each other, as well as their work. I have found that the more you get on with your supplier, the better the outcome of the product and the less stressful the whole wedding planning process is.
Once you’ve found a few bakers that you like, contact them to see if they are available for your big day. The more info you give about your wedding the better. The basic points to include are; where are you getting married, what date is your wedding, what are you looking for (3 tier naked cake, for example) and lastly, any dietary requirements you or your guests have. Your shortlist of bakers should then respond with their availability, and help you design the wedding cake you’ve always dreamed of. This may include a cake consultation and/or tasting session which is so much fun!
I have found that the best way to choose anything your wedding is through word of mouth. 99% of the suppliers I am using for my wedding are people that worked on my friend’s weddings, and their work was so good that i wanted them for mine too. Don’t worry about having the same cake maker as your friends, because ultimately they should create something unique to your wedding, not something your best friend had. No-one will know if its the same person or not!
