What are the alternatives to wedding cake?
It’s a question I get all the time. Sometimes it’s not even that couples don’t like cake, they just want something a little bit different for various reasons.
First and foremost, please remember that it’s your wedding day and you can have whatever you like. I know it’s tough to tell people who have their own ideas of what a wedding should be that you want to buck the curve of ‘normality’, but it really is first and foremost about you as a couple. If you don’t want to do a cake cutting ceremony, don’t! If you don’t like a fondant covered fruit cake, don’t have one.
Brownie or Brookie towers.
These are growing hugely in popularity and I can totally see why. A huge pile of delicious brownies or brookies, with fresh berries woven in to the stack is not only a gorgeous sight, but also delicious. These are especially popular for a low key wedding or for couples that have a sweet tooth but dont want to spend the money on a big wedding cake. Plus, there is no need to cut the cake or have the ceremony that goes with it. You can even have a cake topper to personalise the stack further.
Cupcakes
Wedding cupcakes have been around for a while and were super popular about 10 years ago, although they have never really gone away. They’re usually accompanied by a very small ‘cutting’ cake. Cupcakes are great for those couples who have a lot of people with dietary requirements as you can have so many variants of the same flavour but gluten free for one, dairy free for another, as an example. The accompaniment of a small cutting cake means that you can still do the cake cutting ceremony if you want to.
Macarons
Macaron displays are absolutely beautiful! They can be created to match any colour scheme so they are super versatile. Not to mention super classy and elegant looking.
Macarons are perfect for couples who don't have the biggest sweet tooth but want something spectacular for guests to marvel over. You could even have macarons as wedding favours for your guests.
Treat Tables
Why not have all of the above on a spectacular treat table! You can also add cookies or cake pops for a truly memorable table that all your guests will love. No cake cutting, just delicious treats for everyone to enjoy.
If you are really anti-cake, why not have a literal cheese cake? I’ve seen couples set up wheels of their favourite cheeses to look like a 3 tiered cake. The smaller wheel at the top could have a cake topper on it too. You could have this as part of your evening snacks and serve with charcuterie boards, breads and crackers, fresh fruit and chutneys. I’m hungry at the thought!
